My Teaching Philosophy
I often compare private music instruction to the relationship between a physician and a patient. A skilled physician does not prescribe the same treatment for every individual. Instead, they listen carefully, assess each person's needs, and create a plan that is unique to them.
I believe teaching should be approached in the same way.
Every student comes with different experiences, strengths, challenges, personalities, and dreams. Some students hope to make their school orchestra or youth symphony. Others are preparing for auditions or competitions. Some simply want the joy of making music, while adults may be returning to an instrument they once loved. My responsibility is to understand each student as an individual and design instruction that helps them reach their fullest potential.
Students can expect my complete attention, more than three decades of teaching experience, thoughtful problem-solving, and a joyful, encouraging environment where curiosity and growth are celebrated.
One of the most important things I teach is how to practice. Developing the ability to listen critically, solve problems independently, and evaluate one's own playing creates confident, independent musicians. These skills extend far beyond music and become valuable tools for lifelong learning.
I also believe that meaningful achievement requires commitment. Progress comes through consistent practice, thoughtful guidance, patience, and celebrating each small success along the way.
Beginning Our Musical Journey
Before beginning lessons, I enjoy meeting with prospective students and families either by phone or in person. I want to hear your story, learn what has inspired you to seek lessons, and understand what you hope music will bring to your life.
Each student completes a goal sheet so that together we can create a personalized path for growth. Whether your goal is to begin your musical journey, prepare for auditions, build confidence, or simply experience the joy of making music, lessons will be designed specifically for you.
After nearly four decades of teaching, I remain inspired every time a student discovers a beautiful sound, masters a difficult passage, performs with confidence, or simply smiles because they have accomplished something they once thought impossible.
I believe music has the power to change lives because it changed mine.
